Allegrini Palazzo della Torre £17.99 A classic from the Veneto – broad, complex, exciting. One of the region’s first serous single-vineyard wines designed to compete with the best of grand reds and a success right from the start. Single vineyard with vines up to 50 years old, mostly Corvina. Winemaking: ripasso using 30% dried grapes (dried for 3 months) followed by 15 months in second-use barrique.
Beronia Rioja Gran Reserva 2004 £18.99 Rarely have we come across a wine that absolutely everybody seems to love. Wine buffs appreciate it as a benchmark of its style – this is exactly what a mature Rioja Gran Reserva should be like, total beginners look up from the glass with a smile “wow, that’s tasty”. And everyone at CWM just loves to drink it. 2004 was a stunning vintage in Spain – one of the very best ever.
Lovely light pink, a touch herbaceous on the nose. True charmer of a
Rosé with ripe morello cherry flavours, a refreshing acidity and clean
as a whistle finish. Great deal for a premium Bordelaise Rosé from a
first rate family-owned chateau.
Bordeaux Rosé is a rather over-looked and under-rated style. Fully dry, rather serious, and a versatile dinner wine.
Our biggest-selling Bordeaux Rousseau de Sipian. Amazing value, thoroughly classic wines. Surrounded by such first rate properties as Patache d’Aux and Tour de By. Grand dinner wines of evident class and structure. Last few cases of these mature bargains – get some in for Christmas… 2002 £11.99 Beautifully mature and evolved, wood-smoke and truffles, a supple, versatile dinner wine. 2004 £12.99 Rich, savoury, autumnal.
Rolle is the French name for the ancient and noble Vermentino grape of Italian fame. Reserved and taut but brimming with nettly, fennel goodness. An ace match for herby chicken dishes, risotto, and fish dishes with green herbs and/or lemon. Huge staff and customer favourite.
Dr Loosen Riesling Estate 2010 £8.99 Benchmark estate which showcases the very best of modern German winemaking whilst remaining true to traditional concepts of style and terroir. Quite golden, nice ripeness & vivid acidity. All from Loosen vineyards, and a step from the delicious Dr L. Totally yum with fish starters.
Gonzalez Byass Leonor Palo Cortado £12.99 Flavours of spice and nut, delicate, complex, delicious and scandalously inexpensive. This strange and beautiful freak of nature was intended to age as a Fino or Amontillado but changed its mind and jettisoned its flor, thus ageing in Oloroso fashion.
Mar lborough Sauvignon Blanc 2011 Greywacke is currently NZ’s most sought after, cult Sauvignon Blanc, and it lives up to its hype. It has the singular skill of transporting you back to twenty years ago when you will have first tasted top flight Marlborough Sauvignon – the shock to the senses and momentum on the palate is gripping and although the landscape has changed, this wine proves that quality will always out. Matthew Jukes, December 2011
Joseph Perrier Brut NV Cuvée Royale On top form. Citrus and broad, charmingly delicate. We've been shipping this for 15 years and it's still just gorgeous. Super value at £27.95 compared with many of the big name Champagnes.
Meerlust Red 2009 Stellenbosch This is quite a beast. The baby wine of a leading Stellenbosch estate. Mostly Cabernet, this is the classic South African interpretation of Bordeaux blend. Dense, glossy, earthy, packed with currant fruit, green pepper and cedar. A lot of wine at the price. £12.99.
Mont Rocher Old Vine Carignan £6.99 Free local delivery – ask for details. Stunning wine. A whole truck-full of bright, juicy and silky-soft old vine Carignan goodness floods across your palate. Red fruits and prettiness abound. A remarkable drop at the price. Massive staff favourite for us. Lovely with grilled food, or slightly chilled with light suppers.
Nostros Pinot Noir £6.99 It's hard to know why this wine is so cheap. It’s fine and scented with bags of proper Pinot character and a charming smokiness. Tannins are tame and though it’s got enough body to work as a dinner wine it works a treat as a sipper.
Pinot Gris Princes Abbes 2008 Schlumberger £13.99 This is top stuff and a cracking price. The WSET use this wine to demonstrate a perfect expression of the style. Creamy and rich, just lush enough but not gloopy. Smoky and spicy. Amazingly versatile food wine. Perfect with roast birds.
Sound of Islay Seventh Edition Single Islay Malt £28 Our own single-cask bottling of Bunnahabhain. Heavily peated, it tastes rather like a young Caol Ila, which is no bad thing. Last few hundred bottles.
